VLDL from normal subjects contain apoE-I, II and III
they found patients with type III hyperlipoproteinaemia were homozygous for ApoEd - which was later renamed ApoE2
this inhibits its ability to act as a ligand for the LDL receptor which usually mediates the uptake of ApoE3 and ApoE4
