knowledge of lipid disorders was non existent half a century ago
this changed after Fredrickson’s classification of lipoprotein phenotypes
this magnum opus was aimed to provide physicians with the information needed to manage dyslipidaemia
fredrickson and colleagues introduced the idea of classifying the various disorders in terms of lipoproteins rather than lipids.
lipoproteins can be separated according to their density on ultracentrifugation into:
- very low density lipoprotein
- low density lipoprotein
- high density lipprotein
or by their electrophoretic mobility into beta and alpha lipoproteins
